Hi,
Is the aircond for Kancil problematic due to its size? Anybody has good recommendation on how to fix it? Upgrading compressor? I have a Kancil and have replaced the compressor with a used one 2 years back and the gas is leaking now. The aircond man said the compressor for Perodua car is small and tend to have problem. He recommended me to upgrade to a Vitara's unit. -------------------- Please join the Toyota facebook group --> HERE

Bao tai yan,
I don't think it is problematic just because of its size. Rather, I would say its how it is maintained. Mine has served me well, and it is gonna be 13 yrs old soon. Nvr been changed b4. Just regular servicing and use proper grade of compressor oil. By saying regular servicing, I don't mean dismantling evaporator/cooling coil, blower, condensor and compressor. I will only dismantle them if there is any leakage in the system. The operative word here is preventive. One can reduce chances of clogged evaporator by installing a cabin filter for Kancil. Yes there is such thing although Perodua sucked by skimping on this item right from factory. Another important step that you can do is to change out old compressor oil by going to specialist shops that has proper machine to do this. You can check out the aircond maintenance thread at the Car maintenance sub-forum for some recommendation of shops that do this service. Having said things above, I think one has to bear in mind Kancil's aircond has some big limitation in term of cooling capacity. Knowing Msian attitude, they tend to switch it on at max setting. Saw this even with Iswara/Wira that are known to have great/superb aircond system. Maxing things out tend to shorten its lifespan. As for replacing the ori compressor with a Vitara's unit, yes I have heard aircond guys who offered that option to me last time. They said it will fit, but the penalty is higher power loss due to higher load from the upgraded compressor. That can't be a good thing as Kancil is already well known to be under powered as it is. If yours is a 850cc engined, maybe can try la. If 660cc engined ones, I would say good luck to you, unless you don't care about drivability anyway. As admitted by a Denso SC service personel, Kancil's problem is more with the design of its dashboard, or rather its aircond vents position. That's the reason why newer Kancil (round headlight version) have its vents nearer to the driver/passengers. Maybe you want to convert the dashboard to this new Kancil dashboard? Regards. |

Hi Leong, Thanks for the informative reply and I find it very useful. Both of the drive shafts for the Kancil already making those annoying sounds when taking corner, how much would it take to change to a set of new/used? It is a 850 manual. For the aircond, I guess the next repair would be quite expensive as I need to trace the source of the gas leakage. I need to pump the gas once every 4 months now. -------------------- Please join the Toyota facebook group --> HERE

I don't think I can help much on your aircond issue other than recommending you a better place to service. That place is Denso SC at Glenmarie. Guaranteed ori parts used with no hanky panky things. As for your driveshafts giving out noise when cornering, there are 2 ways. Option A is replace the defective part or B, replace the entire drive shaft. Option A entails changing the worn CV joint(s). This option is cheaper but involve longer changing time. Depending on the skill of your usual mechanic, it may or may not last long. If I remember correctly, it will cost below RM100 each side plus labour, new CV joint and rubber boot. But pricing depends also on whether the joint is from Taiwan or Japan. Option B has 2 route. Route 1 is changing the entire drive shaft to a recond unit. Route 2 on the hand changing to an entirely new drive shaft. Recond ones was only about RM80-90 per side back in 2006. Did not last long with my driving style; only a few months and they were gone. As for new ones, I have tried Korean made and ori Daihatsu (was told Taiwan made). Korean ones didn't last long either. Its rubber boot cracked very fast. Used to cost me RM120 each in 2006. Ori Daihatsu ones is what I am using now. Changed to them in early 2007 and tip-top until today. Bought them for RM150 per side at PH Auto. Lastly there is ori Daihatsu from Japan and these are super expensive; RM320 per side in 2007. My advise, don't try to save money when you're changing drive shafts. Go for the ori Daihatsu ones. Less headache and maintenance in the long run. Regards. |

Regards. wow! your Kancil's aircond compressor can last 13yrs! my new Kancil's aircond compressor only last 2 yrs! reason is: after 1.5 year of driving my Kancil, i have a small accident. when the workshop repair my Kancil, they have to dismantle the aircon pipe, the evaporatorl, blower, condensor etc. after finish repair, they refill the coolant. Maybe they don't did it properly, after this repair my aircond spoit within 6 months. went to aircond service centre, they told me my kancil compressor spoilt, have to replace it. But it won't last long also, because after this, i drive my kancil for about 1 year than have another accident. Than sent to another workshop, and than the same history repeat it self for the 2nd time. I am now driving with 3rd compressor, but i think it won't last long also. because, last time my car leaking black oil heavily, sent to repair, they have to dismantle the aircond pipe also. After this repair, my kancil's aircond not as cold as before. This is going to be the 3rd time the history repeat it self (i guess). |

Actually, I have seen quite a number of times whereby the kancil's engine and gearbox are out with its aircond system still intact in the engine compartment ie untouched, not disassembled. Maybe your mech has his reason to disassemble it; be it money or skill related.

The aircon compressor on my Kancil (660 auto) lasted 11 years with zero servicing and maintenance!!
The one on my '05 Accord lasted only 3 years with servicing done at every 20K kms!! |

this a/c guy dunno what he say ler, for kancil a/c, got 2 type, either rotary (usually denso) or piston (usually sanden), if u use rotary, will not last long but wun put too much drag on the engine, piston last longer but can drag the engine a lot, if ur a/c got leakage, that means got leakage, nothing to do wif the size of the compressor, the leakage cud be at the piping or cooling coil, most important, identify and fix the leakage, some ppl just top up gas and drive on, if just top up gas without topping up oil, the compressor will spoil very soon
the vitara compressor is a recond compressor, i m using one right now in my kenari, but to be honest, although it's cooler, a recond is always a recond, the condition will nvr be as good as brand new compressor, mine already got some metal grazing sound at high rpm, if ur car is used everyday and not a spare car, advise to get a brand new compressor, furthermore, the mounting bracket that comes with that recond compressor doesnt last long, mine broken already within one mth and that a/c shop blame my driving style that cause the bracket to be broken |

Tak tentu,
Seems like your air ventilation inside your engine compartment not good enuogh. That's why when you open the bonnet your air become cooler coz fresh air come in. Better you check your condensor fan functioning or not. If yes, then check the speed of the fan.Afraid not rotate fast enough to cool the condensor. -------------------- arare
