First of all, special thanks to our "specialist and adviser" on Rim And
Tyre column Mr vr2turbo who unselfishly gives us so many useful ideas.
Now l request for your kind and generous viewpoints again. Recently my
son bought a brand new Myvi which is fixed with Silverstone tyres. The
problem is that occasionally he has to travel few hundred KM one day.
Should he change to a new set of better quality Japanese tyres now ? Or
rely on the present stocked ones till a suitable time when the tyres are
old enough? Thanks with regards.

Silverstone also OK...

But then, you are talking abt Japanese tyres..hehe...but those budget entry
level types like Falken 322, Yoko S306 etc, you are better of with
Silverstone.

For quality stuff you need to go abit upper range..the current ones to get
are Falken ZE912. If you can find a shop that accepts high trade in for new
car tires then its worth to change tires.

If my job takes me a few hundred KM in one day I'll get the Michelin
PP2...not sure if its available for the MyVi size...very quality stuff,
good grip rain or dry, but ride is a bit bumpy and some resonance depending
on road surface.

Is Michelin's low rolling resistance tyre recommended for long distance
driving, to maximise fuel saving? Any downsides to such tyres?

hi 521329 ..(do u hv a name?)

few hundred KM's a day .. well~ quite a lot and I assumed lot's of
highway drive. I would advice to change to a tires tht provides decent
WET Grip .. Maybe as bro.azbro suggestion ..ZE912 and its not expensive.

Especially Rainning season now . highway full of water patch and it might
skid if your son( I assumed he is in-experience) run into water patch.
The Myvi comes with standard Silverstone and not those directional
pattern furthermore Traction of these tires are ???? So better be safe.

mubull,

Like Beverly Hills 90210 lah...

521329,

Aiyah, if you pen 4 digit better, we can try our luck....ha! ha!
Back to tyres, like bro. azbro mentioned, if you stick to speed limit, slow
down in the rain and all those then the silverstone will be okay.

But for me, tyres are the only contact patch on the road for your car.
Changing the tyres may cost a lot for some, but you must understand that
these will last you at least two years, therefore if you divide it up it is
not too much. Moreover if you change now you can trade in your present tyres.
Are your tyre size 185/60/R14? You can also upgrade if you need to 195/50/R15.
The ZE-912 as mentioned are good value for money tyres. If from P.J., you
can try Hup Shun in SS3.

hey guys,

I also just recently bought Myvi for the wifey, and found the Sime Astar
Prima tyre crappy in terms of grip and very very noisye. A far cry from my
Mich PP2(of course lah since price also very far different). Am thinking
of changing to a quiet and better grip tyre, but I'm having problems
finding a suitable one that fits Myvi's 14" rim.

Still shopping around to find which tyre to try, hehe. Maybe sifu vr2turbo
or azbro can recommend which tyre to get. Priority is quiet and abit of
grip with some wet road handling, since even put UHP tyre also pointless
since myvi handling and cornering is horrible with their soft suspension.

First and foremost, sincere thanks to azbro, mubull and of course don't
forget vr2turbo who responded positively to my lucky number. Who knows it
may come out in Magmum, Toto or Big Sweep soon.
This morning l went to a Silverstone tyre shop and was told by the boss
that no need to change to other bigger imported 185-60-14 tyres because
Silverstone is equivalent to imported ones in term of quality and yet is
much cheaper. The original 175-65-14 Silver suits the best because the
185-14-60 will make Myvi crappy and floaty.
So now l am hesitating what to do next. More suggestions please.

nazirmz,

Without rims upgrade, just got for tyre size change to 185/60/R14.

You can use the Falken ZE-912, which most people have claimed to handle
well in both dry and wet and are relatively quiet.
Currently value for money tyres, as they are not expensive too.

521329,

So your number came out or not.
If yes, you can change rims and tyres for your son, and can complete with a
lunch for azbro, mubull and me......ha! ha!

Aiyah, you go the silverstone shop, sure they tell you like that lah. If
you go the Bridgestone shop, they will say silverstone hopeless and BS is
good and if go to Goodyear shop, sure GY is good...ha! ha!

If you are not upgrading the rims, just change the tyres. Falken ZE-912 is
a good bet. Go for 185/60/R14 and I guarantee it should give you a firmer
ride with better handling in both wet and dry. Most of my friends,
colleagues, and some forumers who are on the Myvi too, has gone to
185/60/R14, and with rim change has gone 195/50/R15 and some 205/40/R17.

A 185/60/R14 will definitely handle back than a 175/65/R14. The width is
wider and the aspect ratio is lower. How can it be more crappy and floaty?
I have a friend using 185/60/R14, who wanted a cheaper tyres, so he went
for 175/65/R14 and now is complaining the tyres not good. Handling very
poor. Hah! so now it is the reverse.

The tyre shop that I go too, when the boss see me, he either let me browse
around his shop or either he will ask what I am looking for? For friends or
myself. What tyre you looking for? He does not recommend because he know
more or less I am already set to look out for a certain tyre. He also
amazed that I ask for tyres that are not even launched yet...ha! ha!

One thing for sure, don't go back to that Silverstone shop....heh! heh! heh!

I am one of those who use 205/40/17 on myvi...

i have yet to change the tires on the other myvi to 185/60/14 as do not
have the dough. and its not my daily driver. my daily is the 17inch one.
hehehe...

the silverstones are durable like rocks but they do not provide the
stability of a good middle-"class" tire like Falken 912s.

get em changed and let us know what your son thinks!
