I am driving a Saga LMST (3.5 yrs old). The temperature meter is a
digital one with 6 bars. Normally, the meter will show 3 bars in normal
operating conditions. Lately, the temperature meter indicator will shoot
up to 4 bars after 1/2 hour driving. It normally occurs when I stop at
the toll or slow down. The strange thing is it will go back to the normal
temperature i.e. 3 bars when I do these things:
(i) shut down the air-conditioning
(ii) go on high speed again (110 - 130km/h)

It can then vary again if I switch the air con again and will go up and
down.

Has anyone faced similar experience? I am wondering whether is it the
temperature meter indicator/sensor that is faulty or do I have a serious
problem at hand. Have checked the coolant level and it is at the normal
level.

1. check water level. if topping up is required often, suspect there is a
leak. make sure that the spare tank or, expansion tank always has
adequate coolant/water level.

2. switch on the engine and let it run idle. make sure a/cond off. then
open bonnet. wait until radiator cooling fan starts operating. if the fan
operates when the only when the temperature is too high, send car for a
check up. maybe the fan switch/or temperature sender is faulty.

if both items ok, need not to worry.

most likely is the cooling fan, after few years ,the electric cooling fan
will become weak and insufficient to cool down the radiator,that's way when
you switch off air-con the temperature will back to normal again.

For Saga asnd Wira, MOST ppl. will throw away the Thermostate and make
the fan on all the time.

Shutting down your air-con, there will not be any exchange of heat at your
condenser, therefore your temperature will be alright.
Running at 110 to 130 the volume of air going thru' your radiator will be
enough to cool your engine.

Therefore I will agree with toyowira that your fan should be weak. Can out
your fan speed. It may be working but not running fast enough. If this is
the case change it.

Bro. Azbro,

Running without thermostat, the car may be running too cold. The Car engine
has to run at certain temperature to be at optimum running condition.
I tried before in an old car of mine. Main problem was morning cold start
as the car took a long time to heat up. Jerking and running on high fuel
until car warms up.......

Thanx guys, I am gonna get the fan motor changed today. Hopefully that
will solve the problem. My mechanic told me that the original fan by APM
will cost around RM280, not sure if the price is reasonable. Will post
again once I test the car out somewhere next week.

check all the rubber hose that connect the engine to coolant tank. the
mechanics will usually use water pump to detect the leakage (if the
leakage is too small which cant be detect with eyes, but the water will
leak very slowly, which i think is dangerous, and this could be the
problem of the uncertain indicator level from the meter).

next check on the fan of air cond and fan of engine, enfine fan should be
working if engine is hot (as the idea suggests, to cool down engine),
while the aircond fan should be operated when the aircond 'kicks in' ( u
could hear the 'tuk' sound when it is 'kicking in'.

check the resevoir of the water if the water is below min level, if so
add water up. if the water become 'colourless, brownish or u could see
some tiny particles, u should service ur cooling system, if not, add in
water and coolant to the ratio of 1 to 1, remember not to add coolant to
the tank.

been facing the same problems two months before for my yr 2000 city type
z, but went back normal after i changed a 5cm water hose that connects
between EFI system and engines at cost of rm15 only.

My 1990 sentra also had this problem before. I did throw away the
thermostat and this solved the overheating problem. However, the engine got
too cold during cold weather, affecting fuel economy and performance. This
also accelerated the wear and tear of the cooling fan. So, my advice is to
change the thermostat/switch.

hi..

happen to me last week for my Accord.

Drive around 90km/h and above, temperature condition normal 1/2
when stop at traffic light or climbing hill, temperature will go up to 3/4

first suspect; fan, radiator leak and thermostat.

finally only change the thermostats and all problem solved.

if water level ok... it's mostly the fan but it could also be the water
pump.

DO THE FOLLOWING WHEN UR CAR ENGINE IS COLD!
Open up the radiator water cap and start ur engine. Rev the engine to see
if the water is being sucked in... if suction is weak it could be the
water pump.
