I believe the parts and repairs cost for ANY brand of Japanese heavy duty
4WD like Isuzu Trooper, Mitsubishi Pajero, Toyota Prado etc are more or
less the same when it comes to using ORIGINAL parts. And they are all
always more expensive then saloon cars. For example, the bigger & tougher
4WD tires will of course cost a lot more.

The reason why some people might say Toyota are cheaper is probably because
there are many non-original parts available for the more popular Toyota and
less so for Isuzu.

And according to a mechanic, Toyota parts are off inter-changeable amongst
the various model making availability much better.

Hello Tourist,
I clock about 2200km at month. Does that justify me in using a 4x4
diesel ? Cheers. How much you spend a year in maintaining your ride ?

My experience told me that Isuzu are never built for speed and have lower
top speed then most. For example, both my ex-2.8TD Trooper and my present
3.1TDi Trooper both gave the same precise top speed as per the
specification : 139kph.

RPM very high on the 3.1TDi at 100-kph. I think around 2700rpm (not sure)
but car extremely stable and that's why I bought it over the Prado. Heard
Pajero are good but I don't have that experience to know for sure. But keep
in mind 4WD are not designed for high speed stability and any good
continental car can beat them easily.

In town driving, I don't thing anyone can beat the Prado for comfort but
too much body roll on sweeping highway making comfort less good. The exact
opposite of Trooper. So you much decide what you wanted your car for.

This is what I wrote above:

"IMO, the UBS69 and UBS55 has very different driving characters. I would
say its Night & Day. To put the example to the extreme, the 3.1 would be
like a slightly underpowered lumbering heavy Mercedes (and the larger
non-factory 265 tires I upgraded vs factory 245 make things slightly worst)
and the 2.8 is like a nicely powered agile Japanese Honda Civic."

UBS69 3.1Tdi 4JG2-TC

UBS55 2.8Td. 4JB1-T. Same engine & similar chassis to the Invader/Rodeo.

IMO, the gearing of the UBS69 are very much designed for heavy duty towing
work. For example, the 1st & 2nd gears are EXTREMELY low. Big gap moving up
to 3rd gear. Not nice to drive in town and very large turning circle make
it worst. As I said, if you want to drive 4WD in town, Prado is much better
choice. But my butt says Trooper seat cushion and size is better.

willie... where did u get for RM35k? i am being offered one unit at the
price of RM40k, 1996 model, non green engine. It is ex government unit.

well, prado TZ run on petrol, if i am not mistaken.... sure more powerful
than diesel car.

Trooper 3.1 come with intercooler turbo, i think it should be powerful
enough to move the car.... maybe u had been driving petrol car all along,
that why u feel it is not running when u depress the accelerator.

Thanks.

To better describe power, must put it in measurable term. What I once did
was to really floor the accelerator on a straight light traffic level road.
Up shift at 3500 rpm and reach 100 kph in about 20.5 second. Ya, it's slow.

btw, forget about going higher then 3500 rpm. No power there as with almost
all types of diesel engines.
