Hi,
Need some advise here. Last weekend went to Genting Highland with my
family. I would say full load on my Toyota Unser. I have change the brake
pad to Bendix Metal King about 2 months back.
On the way down from top to Awana resort, my brake giving out smoke. I
realise my brake pad was already burned due to overheat.Anyone can suggest
whether I should change the pad and repair the caliper? Or is it safe to
continue using it?

Hi dragonball,
Is time to change the brake pad, since is burnt already. The pad is
porous already, and look like burnt characoal.
I have the same experience like this, but not from mountain road. Juz
change the pad and solve the thing.

if overheat, the braking power will become weak, so better replace a new 1

Metal king can stand pretty high temperature.
Never had problem with it even down from Genting. In fact I prefer it when
it has heated up.
Do not play play with the brakes. Get it checked.
Like fkm mentioned, why did it overheat?
Check whether it is binding or not? (Not release enough, causing the pads
to have heavy contact with the disc, even when not braking)

dragonball,
it doesn't matter if its two months or two years, the problem why the
brakes fail and smoke is because when you were travelling downhill, you
depended solely on the brakes to slow the vehicle (some more your vehicle
is fully loaded, thus it needs more pressure to brake, because with added
weight, momentum will increase) thus, the brakes will overheat if prolong
usage is used...
one way of preventing brake pads fading from happening is to use lower
gears (gear 2) to slow the vehicle down (engine braking) while using the
brakes as secondary, secondly, a lot of ppl still drive down hill while
on free gear... never ever drive down hill without engaging any gears....
that will be suicide....
cheers

I agree with adnoc....a long time ago I once drove downhill from Genting
in the old Volvo 240(a heavy car) and by the time I reached Genting
Sempah there was no brake at all, lucky didnt knock into the hill or
upcoming cars. Later on the Karak Highway the brakes came back...My
mechanic told me that was because the brake fluid was boiling and when
cooler on the Karak Highway, the brakes came back. So never use brakes
continuosly when going on such roads.
As to the present problem, you may also have to skim your discs in
addition to putting in new pads....and dont forget to replace the brake
fluid.

Hi,
Thanks to everyone for the advice. The problem was both front brake was
smoking. I guess the brake fluid might have fail the brake system. I used
to come down from Genting using 3rd gear. When the speed goes up to 50km,
I will applied a bit of brake to slow down. I dont applied brake at all
time as I know well about this.
I dont have problem using the original brake from Toyota and this Metal
King is my first non-original brake. It has failed my expectation after
reading so much of the stopping advantage it gives. Maybe Mintye have
brakes for Genting Highland as you can see their sign board when you are
on your way up.
As for the skimming, I am not sure whether I should do it or not? Probably
I would go back to Toyota service to change to the original brake pad. At
least I dont have problem if I am going to Hill resort in future.

Your brake pads are Metal King normal right?
Metal King Imitation??????
I have used Metal King Plus and now on Metal King Gold. So far no problem
with stopping even from 190km/hr. Tap the brakes and it will slow down
immediately. The hotter the better the grip..
