Proton Wira Diesel 2.0

hi guys,

i have been driving a petrol engine car all this while and do not have any
knowledge in diesel engines. recently, my company wanted to purchase a
diesel engine car for frequent long distance travels. my colleague
suggested proton wira diesel 2.0. is proton still manufacturing new cars
of this type of engine? i noticed in the 2nd car for sale section in the
paper ... most of this car are manufactured during 1995-1998. will it be
worth buying? thanks.

I think Proton no longer manufacture diesel cars. Matdiesel drives one, he
should advise you regarding its worth. Good luck.

Hi! :-)
You know what? I happened to be thinking of selling mine, a Wira Diesel
2.0, search for a Wira 2.0D in the "sell" section. I no longer need to do
the distance daily as I used too and thinking of moving on to smaller
petrol version. The road tax for a diesel is definately higher than a
petrols but for those travelling long distances daily the savings from
fuel consumption can very quickly offset the roadtax. In my case it no
longer does, I travel much less these days. Check out the add, and email
me if interested to consider.

Proton had hoped to enter the diesel market in Europe but found they
could not compete. Same thing with the Waja Diesel which had its program
cancelled because the business case was not good enough.

The Mitsu diesel engine was a major reason for its downfall - it should
have purchased the Peugeot diesel engine instead.

With the Waja, it is another case - the standard 1.6 petrol Waja has lousy
engine mountings - this makes it a poor basis for a diesel. Already, with
the petrol engine, NVH is bad. Imagine what a rattling diesel will do
inside a Waja body!

Yup, even with a solid body like Citroen, my Xantia TD still have its
rattles and squeaks. Now with the new generation HDI diesel engines, these
problems should be put to rest but Malaysia is not ready for these hi tech
engines yet.

proton needs a base HDI diesel if it were to be a decent player in the
european market. diesel has been the way to go for sometime in europe.

At the time Proton had the Mitsubishi diesel, Japanese diesels were still
not that good in Europe. Furthermore, it has two Wira diesels - one was
the non-turbo for Malaysia and the other was the turbo for Europe. At
that time in mid-1990s, Proton did not sell the turbodiesel in Malaysia
due to cost reasons.

With the Waja, the initial product plan was to have a diesel but about 6
months or so after the launch, it was cancelled because they felt there
would not be enough demand.

Now that Proton is buddy2 with Renault, maybe they have access to a good
diesel engine which they would need to improve their appeal in Europe. I
suppose it would also be good for African markets where diesel is widely
used. Petrol quality is not so good in places like Morocco (I remember
testing a 307 there and the engine ran into problems because of fuel
quality being so bad).
