Hope this helps those who are planning to buy a used car from owner or dealer.

Note : This is not fool proof guide that cover everything but I tried to share as much as possible within my knowledge (lots of them from Bro byebye2u) and experience in buying mine. Welcome everyone to share and contribute to the list.

1. Monitor Advertisement
Help to be familiar with the market price, registration years, spec and optional accessories. Some ads may be repost from time to time, so will give you background info if the car is worthy buy. These can be easily and quickly checked online at following websites
i. AutoWorld.com.my
ii. MotorTrader.com.my
iii. Mudah.my
iv. Carlist.my
v. TheStar.com.my

2. Shortlist Ads
Shortlist several ads that meet your requirements and budget. Call up to enquire more especially on the model spec, condition and owner history.

3. View Car
On external viewing, examine carefully on following
i. painting condition and if repaint is done (check the reason as it could possibly due to accident).
ii. Tire condition. Each Rexton tire cost from RM400~RM750.
iii. All electronic lighting indicator is functioning.
iv. Black smoke and engine sound. Rexton engine in good condition is smooth, almost no vibration and quite quiet.
v. Mileages and service records that matched. Milesages meter could be tampered, so service records is a good reference.
vi. Oil leaking at engine area. Some of the leakages could be hidden underneath that is impossible to be seen without jacking up the car.
vii. Oil leaking at absorber and shaft.

4. Test Drive
Important to select the right road to allow optimum testing and get an experience Rexton owner to test drive together if possible.
i. U-turn Test will reveal if there is problem with its Electric Power Steering which very light on low speed and firmer on high speed.
ii. Acceleration Test will reveal the engine, gear transmission & turbo condition at fast acceleration
iii. Highway Test will reveal the engine and suspension condition at high speed.
iv. Brake Test to check out ABS functions.
v. Cornering Test to check out traction control
vi. 4WD Test - try out both 4WL and 4WL to test is functioning well.

5. JPJ Check
You can just call up JPJ branch at http://portal.jpj.go...=...=97&lang=ms and provide the car registration number to check for
i. the car's insurance company history
ii. Owner & transfer history
iii. Current title ownership

6. Insurance Claim
Call up the insurance company to check for claim history. This is the safest way to confirm if the car met any accidents.

7. Ownership Check
If the car is still under bank loan, call the Bank/Finance's Hire Purchase Dept to check if there are pending issues with the title ownership. This will avoid difficulty in ownership transfer and hidden surprise.

8. Check Saman
You can check saman via the following
i. www.myeg.com.my - it may not be up-to-date and some older saman may not be listed.
ii. Local branch of traffic police
iii. Local town council of surrounding council for parking saman.

9. Mechanic Check
After going thru all the check that the car is indeed in good order, you should bring the car to the service center or workshop familiar with Mercedes engine for detail checking. It is good to mix around with other owner to gain more knowledge, tips and experience too.

10. Puspakom Inspection
Important to be presence to witness the inspection if possible. Standard ownership transfer inspection do not include most of the 10 points inspection as listed at http://www.puspakom....inspection.html that is important to ensure the car condition is legal.

11. Buying Insurance
Insurance coverage of more than a year. If you get the insurance on your own, you may save upto RM100 (dealer commission) and you can also transfer NCB discount if your current car is of cheaper value. This may save you RM100 + upto 55% of the insurance fees. Do consider the option to add coverage for windscreen.

12. Ownership Transfer at JPJ
This can be done by runner who charge a service fees of RM250 (inclusive of transfer fees). If you plan to handle on your own, check out http://portal.jpj.go...secara-sukarela .

This may looks lengthy and troublesome, but you don't buy a car too frequent to save the trouble. Buying from direct owner maybe a little more hassle but it worth all the time and effort because you get to know the previous owner directly and most importantly, you save quite a bit. An experience and friendly bank loan officer would be able to guide and facilitate ownership title.

One of my main concern before deciding on Rexton is the maintenance cost, availability of spare part cost and reliability of workshop / service center. Welcome everyone to share their service location and cost, so we could compare each workshop price and services.

Here is the service and change of maintenance parts at Ssangyong Authorised Service Center in Ipoh.

iv. Comfy air-conditional waiting area and friendly customer service.
v. Conveniently located with food court and internet cafe within walking distance.
vi. Good chance to mix around with other owner to share knowledge and experience.

It is expected that the maintenance for a 4X4 SUV is higher but I think the price here are pretty reasonable. Many of the out of warranty Rexton are servicing there too, which shows that their price and services aren't too bad. One of Rexton owner did shared that outside workshop maybe cheaper but lacking of equipments and experience, so major servicing is still better done at the service center.

Hi Bro r3xt0n,

Our local spec is 165 ps at 4000rpm, torque 345Nm at 2400 rpm. The one you mention above is VGT spec sold in europe/uk/Australia. Most local comes with part time 4WD where you can choose 2WD/4WD high and low by the push of a button plus the steering is adjustable too.

Bro Nik,

Thanks. Updated the spec and also updated that it has only 2 drive mode (Standard and Winter).

Do you have the details on the difference between normal spec and full spec; and also between Rexton and Rexton II? The one from Ssangyong M'sia website is for Rexton II only, not sure if it is exactly the same. These are important details especially for new buyer to know what to look out for.

I just added XR1 for engine oil and diesel system that can really feel the difference instantly, even after my major service. The acceleration is more powerful and smoother. Do you add the XR1 for auto transmission too?

I noticed my low beam headlight is a bit dim, been thinking to change to more powerful bulb like Philips or Osram. Not sure if these are supported. What are you using?

P/S : Pls edit your last message not to quote the entire post, very long message le.

Hi Bro r3xt0n,

You covered all aspect already and nicely arrange. Just would like to stress here that the Rexton comes with ESP (electronic stability programme) with ARP (active rollover protection). To test the function, roll down all the window, switch off the radio and aircond, drive slowly tru roundabout or corner and listen carefully to the squeky/braking sound from the rear. It should comes from both left and right to show the system functioning.

All rexton comes with ladder frame chasis( almost undestructable ) and you will feel more bodyroll during test drive, don't worry it can be improve by installing a damper.

The steering is ridiculously light at low speed and parking and gradually firmer as the speed climb.

Cheers

NIK

One of my main concern before deciding on Rexton is the maintenance cost, availability of spare part cost and reliability of workshop / service center. Welcome everyone to share their service location and cost, so we could compare each workshop price and services.

Here is the service and change of maintenance parts at Ssangyong Authorised Service Center in Ipoh.

CHIN CAR CENTRE (IPOH) SDN. BHD.
No. 11, Jalan Ng Song Teik,
Kawasan Perindustrian Jelapang (First Garden)
30100, Ipoh Perak
Tel : 05-526 2206 / 05-526 1206

Google Map

Observations
i. Authorised Service Center for many brands like Kia, Hyundai, Ssangyong, Naza, Mazda, Peugot, Ford, Inokom, Spanco
ii. Saw about 7~8 Rexton of different models and engines down for varying servicing.
iii. Knowledgeable and experience Service Manager and Technician
iv. Comfy air-conditional waiting area and friendly customer service.
v. Conveniently located with food court and internet cafe within walking distance.
vi. Good chance to mix around with other owner to share knowledge and experience.

Regular Servicing
Fully Synethetic Engine Oil = RM24.20 X 9 Litre = RM217.80
Oil Pan Nut Washer = RM2.00
Oil Filter = RM56.90
Radiator Coolant = RM55.00

Major Servicing
Filter Air = RM180.00
Air Filter RX = RM104
Belt Poly Grooved = RM250
Gear Oil ATF 134 REX = RM56.00 X 5 = RM280.00
Diesel Fuel Filter = RM360 X 2 = RM720
Water Separator Switch = RM180
Brake Pad Front = RM380
Brake Pad Back = RM320

Parts Replacement
Headlight Small Bulb = RM8.00
Plug Adaptor = RM142
Rever Range Selector = RM85.00
Clip 10-16 (Clip, Washer, Screw, Stopper) = RM65

Other Charges
Service & Labor Cost - RM180
Scan 100 (Reset Fault Code & Tune Up) = RM18

It is expected that the maintenance for a 4X4 SUV is higher but I think the price here are pretty reasonable. Many of the out of warranty Rexton are servicing there too, which shows that their price and services aren't too bad. One of Rexton owner did shared that outside workshop maybe cheaper but lacking of equipments and experience, so major servicing is still better done at the service center.

Yup, some of the items can be found outside cheaper, but for peace of mind knowing that the part are all original better to do at service centre. And as most Rexton owner said :" if i sold these car the next one should be X5,X6,Audi Q7 or cayenne"..hihihihihihi

Cheers

NIK

I will write more on my test drive experience soon. Actually, Rexton has a lot of refinement and details that set it apart from regular SUV that many unaware. I am surely one of them, now still studying the user manual. Hahahaha

Maybe I am too light footed, still have not been able to test out the ESP and ARP yet. Rexton's body roll is nothing if you compare with other 4X4 like Pajero and Prado which I get to drive occasionally, but it will be really nice if the body roll could be improved further by adding a rubber damper.

Before I read the user manual, I find the sterring is too light for a confidence handling but I did not realised that it actually gradually get firmer with speed increase because at high speed, you don't steer much.

Yeah, the Rexton owner I spoken to said exactly the same thing. If he sell his Rexton, he will get either Audi Q7 or Cayenne but has been hesitating because his 2005 Rexton has not given him any problem yet.

He also recommended a workshop in Ipoh that do lots of BMW and Merc where he send his Rexton to for regular service and small repair. They charge RM180 for brake pad (can't remember if it's front or rear) whereas the service center charge RM320 for front and RM380 for rear + RM30 labor cost. Quite a bit of saving if you changing all of them together.

I should hang out at the service center more to get to know more lobang from other Rexton owner. Never know there are actually quite a lot of Rexton owner around here, these owner probably travel outstation more.

Here is my test drive experience on 2 Rexton 270XDI (one owned by bro byebye2u and another one that I was going to buy). I try to be as objective and neautral. I am inexperience in test drive but did driven other 4X4 occasionally like Mitsubishi Pajero 2.5 MT and Toyota Prado TZ Auto that is used as comparison naturally.

Outlook
Although it is full size 4X4 but it do not looks as squarish and clumbsy as other 4X4, it resemble closer to SUV in bigger scale. Have been attracted by its outlook but never taken the initiative to explore more or to test drive one because of Korean branding .

Internal
Once you got in, it feel good to be on the driver seat and feel really spacious, though not as high as Prado. The dashboard buttons looks simple and old Contenental style with big buttons that maybe good to use but poor to please the taste. Full leather and eletrical seats with memory setting is not common usual 4X4.

7 seaters with 3rd row foldable flat and 2nd row lifted up to make space for large cargo make it flexible and my main consideration factor. 3rd row seats could sit 2 average adults or 3 kids without much constrain.

Air-conditioning
Though the aircon blower is quite powerful, but felt it is not cooling enough. Maybe the internal cabin space is much bigger to be cool down. Luckily mine's 3rd row came with its aircon blower, otherwise I don't think it is cooling enough for the 3rd row passenger.

Drive
From ignition, could really feel much difference with a 2.7 diesel engine running, it is very much more quiet (almost unnoticeable engine sound) and no vibration as compared to other 4X4. Sound proofing proved to be good, engine sound still considered quiet for a diesel engine with window winded down.

The next suprise is the steering is way too light, you can steer without any effort. So, those with wifey won't have worry if their wife can handle the steering. This is yet another electronic assisted feature where the steering is assisted with speed variation.

On stock condition, acceleration pickup rate feel decent enough (at least for me), did not noticed turbo charge and engine ramp is barely noticed. On bro byebye2u's remapped, acceleration is unbelieable and you would have thought that you driving a turbo charge sport car, not to forget that is carrying over 2 tonners of burden (the car plus us of course). It felt having so much power to keep accelebrating. Getting from 80kmh to 140kmh is smooth, calm and has more to go.

Stability
On a curve, bro byebye2u demonstrated the ability of ESP (electronic stability programme) with ARP (active rollover protection) by taking quite a big curve at 160kmh. My friend who driving a 2002 CRV for years is really impressed with its stability as well. On stock condition, my one do not feel as firm and solid. Hopefully to achieve bro byebye2u's stability after adding the rubber damper.

Braking
Braking felt so confidence, stable and firm where you don't feel your body wieght thrown to front because of the assistance from EBD (electronic brake distribution).

Others
There are many others minor one that helps to make the difference
1. Glaring headlights from cars behind you seems so much comfortable because the mirror has sensor that control anti-glare.
2. Good sound proofing where you barely notice wind and road noise even at 140kmh.
3. Auto rain sensing wiper
4. Auto side mirror adjusting with switch to close it too.
5. Cabin is well lighted, one at driver mirror and another at rear passenger roof. Auto dim when engine off.

Consideration
A new Rexton II selling at RM175 currently and used 2004 is about RM60k, that is a massive RM115k saving or lost depending which side you are from. You could never get that much features and luxury with the budget of RM60k, especially for a 4X4 or SUV.
