Citroen Xsara 1.6Ai 2000. Experienced intermittent engagement failure causing gear to go from Drive mode into neutral. The S----* will blink. Tried change gear oil and solenoid. Doesnt work. I am worried if need to open up gearbox will cause huge sums of money. Anyone has an idea of what could happen and how to resolve this without opening up the gearbox?

I never own Xsara but use to own C5. Probably Xsara is using AL4 GB. My previous C5 have almost similar problem like yours. First the car start in safe mode (3rd gear). Then intermittently car not moving even in D position. Finally it wont move at all in D or R or in manual. I've changed the ATF and valves and also multifunction switch. It is good for few days. At last I bring down the GB, open it, strip everything and found many worn out parts. The parts can be replaced but the cost is more expensive than buying a 2nd hand GB. So I decided to purchase a 2nd hand GB.

Thats a good feedback for me to re-consider my options. I had another XSara same model and year (Car 1) which previously gave me the same problem. But after fixing the solenoid, it was resolved. However, I had a nagging doubt about the current problem with this different car (Car 2) because I have a feeling that the gearbox is not as robust as my other car (Car 1). Even when the s------* is not blinking, though the car (Car 2) is able to move but I can feel a bit of resistance/drag. The earlier experince I had with the other car (Car 1)was that there is no problem in driving when the s-----* did not light up. Once it did, the car (Car 1) will jerk and start dragging no matter how hard I press on the accelerator until I have to ignite off and re-start.

I have a feeling the parts could have worn out inside (Car 2). But before I go to that, I might want to check out the valves and multifunction switch first. Can advise what valves is that? Did you not change the solenoid as well?

I' also changed the solenoid and multifunction switch. The worn out internal parts are transmission band and shift valve. You also need to install bigger ATF cooler for this AL4 in order to lower down the temp. This will also help to extend the life of yr AL4 GB ant ATF.

I tried disconnect & reconnect the gear box ECU,it work(DIY ), or replace a new multifunction switch on gearbox cost rm5xx .works better(this will need a specialist to do the job).

PS:When reconnect the g/b ecu , I tighhen it with a wire to avoid "Bad connection"
