handbrake on means you gonna need to check your drum shoes. Need to open up
the cover of the rear wheel to see the shoes.

Check the thickness. The link below shows what it looks like.

Gen2 has disc brakes at the back right? If so I wouldn't worry too much.
It's the disc brakes that's supposed to stop the car and not the drum
brakes. The drum brakes are meant for parking only in a car like yours.
Even if used for braking (say in a Kelisa or Wira 1.3) it'll last maybe the
least 1 year.

I got a "scare" on thursday when intending to replace the brake pads for
my mom's 2nd hand kancil.. when the drum brakes at the back were taken
out, I could not help but to notice a lot of grease on the lower half of
the drum, due to over lubrication and leaking wheel cylinder. No wonder
whenever I press the brakes, the car seems to brake more on one side..
both the wheel cylinder were badly rusted and had to be replaced. The
mechanic had to wash the drumb with lots of petrol and soap to remove the
grease residue before fitting in the new pads... so point to note, esp
buying 2nd hand cars with drum brakes, get it checked by another
mechanic..

I think you are a bit confused.
If the car has disc brakes on the rear, they will not have any drum brakes.
The handbrakes works on the discs, as well as when braking.
The handbrakes works by cable by pulling a lever, to pressure the disc pads
onto the disc rotor. Same as in drums, when the lever pushes the brake shoe
onto drum internally.

Certain disc equip rear brake uses drum too like W123 124 mercedes Eclass.
It uses drum for their parking brake and disc for their normal service
brake. This is due to fix caliper can't or difficult to integrate with
parking brake mechanism.

It's true that some car have BOTH drum brake (for handbrake parking) and
disc brake (for normal braking).
I used to have a 1989 Isuzu Trooper 2.8TD and that one only have disc brake
for BOTH Parking & Braking. It gives endless problem with parking because
the integration of Parking & Braking is too fragile and break easily.
Then I upgraded to a 1999 Isuzu Trooper 3.1TDi and this one have BOTH drum
and disc for Parking and Braking respectively. Work much better. Guess
Isuzu realise the problem with the previous 2.8TD.
