The sales report shown the new carmy sales is 1400 + unit for june....which is the top sales in D segment in malaysia

It's the only new model in the D segment. I'm not sure what the sales figures are usually like for the Camry but I'd expect them to be shifting much more than that in their first month. Sales will only go down from here.

Only 4Speed AT - Is that an issue? Do we really need more? 5? 6? 7? Do we drive around Monaco circuit, with many different corners, (that warrants more gear ratios (of course require more driver's control)), where every corner must be tackled with specific gear ratio for engine braking during entry and torque for quick acceleration exiting the corner? This uncle car is meant for cruising where quick successive fast gear change is not required... With the right engine mapping and gear ratios, through geometric regression, matching the engine power and torque curves, the first gear is sufficient to pull the car from standstill.... going rhythmically, smoothly through gears to the cruising speed in top speed.

And as when necessary, for overtaking for example, just floor the accelerator, down shift (1-2 gears) will take place for extra torque to pull the car quickly and safely. But in case of 6-7 gears transmission, the same driver action will cause the transmission to down shift through more gears (2-3 gears, for example), the end result will be the same acceleration times due to more time losses in gear changes.

Aiyo... if that is so, why the trends is getting more gear? ZF already come out with 9 speed. Current 3 series is getting 8 speed tranny? And thereby claiming more fuel economy?

You just sound like the company man that saying esc is not really required therefore for the low end spec, no esc is equipped. But for high spec, it does. Again, if 4 speeds tranny is just good enough, why you put a 6 speeds tranny on the 2.5 model while previously 2.4 also 4 speeds box too?

that's becuase of marketing. people more and more want new tech so call. The 4AT in Camry is nicer to drive than the Accord 5AT seriously. The Camry is so so quiet where the new Accord still lagging behind for NVH albeit much claim about improvement.

More gears gives more parasitic losses .. more complex and sophisticated gearbox design... UNLESS done properly which means more expensive, there is not substantial benefits gained in terms of smooth shifting and fuel economy... Thus some manufacturers just do it to impress customers of high-technology loaded in the vehicle and justify the extra price the customers have to pay... and some manufacturers do it because they are producing performance cars whose customers are happily paying the premium price for the extra umphsss they are getting ... and there are some reliability issues involved with extra complex components to reduce transmission losses... thus some manufacturers stick to lesser gears for normal cars.

Generally speaking, what is important is the lowest gear for take-off and the tallest gear for fuel economy. In between, more gears give more option on the spread of gearing to match the power/torque map. But with so much electronics involved in controlling the engine operating parameters and variables, there are many ways to tweak and optimise the engine dynamics response without the need of having additional ratio.

Ultimately, the best is CVT with infinite number of gear ratios.. so in my opinion, 4AT or 5AT doesn't really make so much different....

Bro elan,
