The battery is just an ordinary battery that I bought at carrefour umpteen
years ago. what happen in my case is when you setup your power supply
system right, the battery usually last too. word of caution, in recent
years due to price competition a lot of traders have resorted to selling
substandard batteries;ie a NS60 is suppose to be 13 plates but hwne one
bothers to count the plates one can only count 11 plates sometimes 9
plates. lately even 7 plate ones have appeared on the market. so just be
carefull.
There is a range of good batteries. this range of battery is usually used
in marine, in luxury yatches mostly. this range of batteries have what is
generally term as deep cycle charactaristics. This kind of battery if used
in automotive will easily last over 10 years, but such batteries cost over
Rm 500 each.

adnoc,

So how does grounding and installation of voltage stabilisers really help or
are they just gimmicks?

I can go one better. Our nine year old Audi is still on its original
battery.

> btw, is this a MF or normal battery?

Ours is a normal battery and I keep up with the maintenance. I've also
loaded it with EDTA to reduce plate sulphation but did that at six years
old when I bought the car.

I also occasionally (once or twice a year) take the battery out to charge
it fully overnight.

Charging is good and can actually prolong the battery's life. Where did u
get yours? Is it a trickle charger? I've been looking for a good one but
haven't had much success.

Etrec,

The basic grounding wire that is factory-fitted is normally one thick
wire from the "-ve" terminal of the battery, connected to the car
chassis, then certain vehicles have an additional wire from the point of
connection on the car chassis/ some use back the same wire and the end of
the wire is connected to the engine block/ gearbox...

Then any other eletrical components' grounding wires are either connected
to the engine block or the car body...

As eletrical current will always find the shortest and the least
resistance way to flow, adding additional grounding wire at specific
points will ease the flow of current... some have claimed brighter
lights, some have claimed better mileage, some have claimed better
power.... as far as i'm concern, i felt that the lights are slightly
brighter....

now, as far as voltage stabilisers are concern, i really do not know
whether it really helps or not... but after looking at so many voltage
stabilisers installed via the wiring system, i wonder if the wiring
system is correct: they actually connect the VS wire to the "-ve"
terminal while retaining the actual factory fitted grounding wire still
connected to the body and engine block....

now as the current flow is concern, it can actually bypass the VS via the
original grounding wire...... so how to stabilise the voltage when there
is more than 1 source of current flow/ supply?

cheers

Sorry, I got mine in the UK when I lived there. Very cheap, only GBP6-7
from Argos.

> Is it a trickle charger?

It's an automatic charger that starts at 6+Amperes and goes down to 1-
2Amps as the battery voltage climbs.

I can't remember where to look but I have seen them in Malaysia. Expensive.

yup. that's the exact type of charger I'm looking for. I did have one where
you leave it overnight but I didn't felt safe using it. it had no info on
it's charging rate.

Jonathan,

Yours 1997 model is it?. If I had kept my original battery then my 1996 A6
would have lasted 10 years by nowWink. Anyway I did change the battery in
2001 after 5 years as every person that I've met mentioned a battery
lifespan of between2-3 years only. The second battery is already into its
5th year and I'm already comtemplating to change to new ones. There's no
sign of failing but I just don't want to wake up one morning and not able
to start up the car. Worst still if I'm back at kampung or somewhere
outstation. Lights are slightly dim however, but it has been like that for
last 4-5 years, that's why I'm also considering grounding ...if it really
helps.

Guys! mine is just the same standard battery bought from AAM coz they
offer discount. They offered to deliver F.O.C to whereever you are (in
Klang Valley) but I just drop by their office at Jln Semarak and get it
change. Battery rating which is similar to original is 65Ah. But I do
fill-up the water, probabbly once every 1-2 years of thereabouts.
