The slightly older underpinnings and engine may not appeal to some, but on the whole, this looks like a pretty good buy.

Agree, but the F10's 2.5 litre is also quite old and the Merc's 5-speed gearbox is ancient. So, every manufacturer appears to carry over something old. Maintenance is still the Volvo's achilles heel although, in reality, servicing at Merc and Bee Emm authorised dealers is not cheap either.
I was told that this Volvo doesn't handle too well but cannot confirm as I haven't driven it yet. Also, navigation is a must in this day and age.

It's a little wallowy at high speeds or when cornered hard. You're best driving it no faster than 150-160kph. Then again, this is not a car meant to be driven hard. If you're looking for a relaxing drive, this car is fine.

That is the general consensus from auto pundits.
The only volvo models that received positive reviews on handling are the new S40 and the V50. Maybe with the XC60 too.
The S40 and V50 share the same platform as the Mazda 3 and Ford Focus.

Test-driven the S40 before...
Suspension quite stiff over bumps and spoiled roads and intrusive inside...
Handling is just above average compared to wallowing Merc C and stable BMW 3 at speeds...
Volvo is best for safety...
At RM170+, the S40 is much better than any Camry, Accord, Mazda 6 minus cabin interior space and ride comfort...
Anyway, a Volvo owner buy it for LIFE... if you get what I meant...
"Volvo for Life"...
