Putting petrol in a diesel car is a fairly common mistake across the World, especially with the advancement of the smoother quieter diesel engines coming on the market. So if you've recently changed from a petrol to a diesel car and find yourself holding the wrong nozzle at the gas station, follow these steps to minimise the expense of rectifying the situation.
There are 2 sitautions covered, either filling and not starting or driving for a while before realising, hopefully this information will help any motorist caught in the predicament. biggrin.gif

Missfuelled and didn't start your engine

1. As soon as you realise you have put petrol in a diesel car, stop filling and DO NOT switch on the ignition, as this will prime your fuel pump and start circulating the contaminated fuel around your fuel system. Petrol is a natural lubricant for your moving parts in your diesel engine, and pump. Petrol going through your pump can cause the moving metal parts to rub together and cause metal particles to be circulated around your fuel system.

2. How much petrol have you put in? If you have put in less than 10% of your tanks capacity, then fill up the remainder with diesel (and the next few times you fill your car) and you should have no issues. MAKE SURE you change your fuel filter ASAP.

3. If you have put in petrol more than 10% of your tanks capacity, call a breakdown recovery service that can drain your fuel tank

4. Once you tank has beed drained, you should be able to fill up your tank as normal and be on your way with no further issues.

5. With ANY missfuelling it is recommended to use a quality fuel additive after the incident.

6. With ANY missfuelling, it is recommended to change your fuel filter soon after the incident.

Missfuelled and drove your vehicle

1. Pull over and switch your engine off as soon as it is safe to do so.

2. Call a breakdown recovery service who are able to drain your fuel tank.

3. The recovery specialist should flush your system and leave you with enough clean diesel to get to the nearest gas station.

4. Fill up your car with the correct diesel.

5. Use a good quality fuel additive when you fill your tank after the missfuelling incident.

6. Change your fuel filter as soon as possible to remove any contaminants that it may contain.
