hello everyone,

Issue 1. Glow Plugs problem.

My Ford Ranger - WLT engine 2.5L Diesel running with NGK Y-701J Glow Plugs now having problem at start up again. It took my first glow plugs about 5 years plus before it gone bad. Now, the new ones took a year or less, which I confirmed 1 faulty the other three still functioning and replaced 1 bad unit and got the my car running but the start up still need two or three times of heating before could start properly. What is wrong here?

Issue 2. Hot start up problem.

I understand that glow plugs are to aid diesel engine start up during cold start up but later with a hot engine I should be able to start the car without waiting for LED indicator on my dash board to turn off. This isn't the case with my engine, I still have to heat it. Anyone has this problem?

Regards.

Sorry, I didn't see your posting earlier. You should post on Trucks & 4x4 thread as those who visit Ford thread are only into cars, SUV and MPV.

Are you sure it is the glow plug itself faulty? It sounds more like faulty electrical components that caused the glow plug to fail. You need to get foreman or wireman to check the distributor and the electrical cables and wires that supply power to the glow plug. If the glow plug is really faulty, you will not be able to start at all for a long time when the weather is real cold. If you could start when indicator off, that means your glow plugs are fine.

Before you send to workshop, what was the outside surrounding temperature when you have problem with starting up? If the temperature outside real cold like Genting Highlands or during the raining season last 2 months ago, you will definitely need the LED indicator to turn off before you should start the engine. Please note that diesel is more difficult to burn compared to petrol. You need to heat up the engine with glow plug before you even start the engine. Else, it will cause severe carbon buildup around the intake, the valves causing bad side effect if you keep starting the engine without heating up when it's too cold.

Please read wikipedia, it explains in general but suffice to understand:
