Hi guys!

I've just registered to this forum. Enjoyed reading all your posting
discussing on so many topics. Lots of knowledge gained!

Actually, I'm planning to get a used semi-compact 4WD. Since this is the
first ever car I want to buy, I need some advise from u guys. Hopefully no
problem and regret in the future. Here's my requirement on that car:

Type : Used semi-compact 4WD
Budget : RM30K - RM37K
Years : 1997 and above

Purposes : 1. For daily transportation to go work
2. For leisure
3. Fishing activities (To carry 11 ft 50kg boat on the roof)

Others : Must be spacious, good engine & suspension quality, easy to
get spare parts, maintanence cost not too high, better fuel
consumption and good resale value.

Cars that got my attention :

KIA SPORTAGE 2.0 (1st Choice)
Pro : Nice modern looks, spacious, etc.
Con : Unknown but lots of problem heard

SUZUKI VITARA 1.6 JLX AUTO (2nd Choice)
Pro : Evergreen and tough looks, spacious, etc.
Con : Unknown but lots of problem heard

PERODUA KEMBARA 1.3 DVVT (3rd Choice)
Pro : Good spare parts availablity
Con : Too small and compact, underpower, sometimes feel unstable while
driving, lots of problem heard.

Guys or owners of the aboved vehicles, please advise which is the best
cars suits my requirement. All cars I heard got a lots of problem. Please
highlight which car are the worst. Thanks in comments guys...Really
appreciate it.

All 3 is capable of doing 1) and 2)
but no 3) pose a litle problem to some especially 3rd choice

To hold down 50kg boat need a stronger car (to pull and to hold on
roof),therefore eliminate choice 2 and 3rd automatically.

you got your choice right there. Possibly Sportage is your best bet.

very dificult to put which are worst becasue each are unique to a problem.

btw, I do not own any one of the above. So standard waiver apply ;)

Thanks for the reply aadnana.

yeah..probably the Perodua Kembara should out of my list. Whichever option
I'll choose, I will install a roof rack to carry the aluminium boat at the
top. Maybe the 1st & 2nd choice will suits my needs nicely. But I heard
the spare parts for Kia Sportage is relatively high.. It will kills you!
Really scared heard this! I don't know if this is same for Vitara as well.
Is it true? How easy to get the Sportage parts?

aadnana, thanks for recommend me the Sportage..I'll noticed it in my mind.
Guys, need more opinion. please help... Sportage or Vitara

50 kg is not really that heavy, about the same weight of a female adult.
However, just make sure that it is legal to carry things on roof top that
are almost as long as the car itself with part of it above the front
bonnet.

In any case, u can count Kembara out. I am not sure about the prices of
the parts, but I would believe that Sportage parts are more available as
compared to Vitara.

50kg is about the standrd weight a typical roofrack is designed to carry.
Depending on the mounting. Typically those foot peck type that installed
on a gutter type roof is more sturdy than the clipped and tightened on
the roofrail.

in any case it is not about the weight but the location of the weight.
50kg on top of a car ,especially mounted inequally can affect the CG og a
car tremendously under some considerable speeed. secondly the type of
footings.

apart of the legal aspect of the car (best thing to check with JPJ),
things to remember is to think ahead the location where to tie the boat,
and the type of straps you need to use to securely tie the boat down.

Many thanks guys. Actually, I have measured the length of the boat. It
revealed that the length is almost same as the length of Perodua Kembara.
The Kembara also can do the job I guess. But the Kembara is quite small
and too compact for me. For security purposes, I plan to install a front
and rear bar, so that I can tie the boats in front and at a back, instead
of tie it up in the middle of the roof rack.

You guys are right. Special permit and approval from JPJ is require to
carry such a large things at the top. The only things in my mind is to
choose what is the best car that suits my requirement, besides to carry
the boat. Wah, none of you recommend the Vitara? Am I right to choose the
Sportage as my best buy?

Hi Existench, I am looking around for an 4 x 4 too..earlier was looking
for the same time like u except for Kia Sportage, was not in my list cos I
am scare of Korean reiliability, especially older model. Vitara was 1st
choice but the parts and maintenance is a bit on high side. Kembara DVVT
is ok but bit cramped, quite diff to find one most are HCEJ old version
which is quite expensive. A bit too small to carry your boat too. Why not
consider a full size ?

I am now expanding my option to Pajero. 2.4 V31 (petrol) or 2.5 V34
(diesel). About the price of your budget, more choice and selection
available in mkt. Part is quite easily available , surprising ly after I
check with few spare shops. I am still considering ...

Try looking around.

for that budget, personally I would get the Toyota Land Cruiser II with following:

-2.4 L engine, petrol
-live axles front and back, coil springs
-7 seater
-parts and replacement engines easily available
-resale should be ok

One exception. It's not a good handling/road holding choice for long
distance high speed drive on tar road. Evertyhing else is as cruiser556
said it is.
