jenn,

Thanks for sharing.

Have you got them fixed yet? Do the problems recur after fixing? How well
does FA or SM respond to your problems? How many unscheduled trips have
you made to the workshop due to these problems?

I am asking so many questions due to the possibility of getting a Volvo
soon myself. Since this will be my first Volvo, kind of having a mixed
feeling about it. Someone in this forum once said this: "stupid ah, pay
more and get a less reliable car". We all know that Japanese made will
work like clockwork (at least that is my experience).

But a Volvo is an upgrade from the Japanese executive sedan. So, just
want to find out more about your situations. My concern is not so much
having problems but rather, it is getting the problems encountered fixed
in one visit thus minimizing the inconvenience.

Will appreciate your feedback. Cheers.

Sengthee,

I am a 2-month old owner of the S40 2.4.

Trust me, the car is very different from the Civic. My previous car was the
ES 1.7 litre.

Haven't really faced any of the issues raised; only common problem was the
front absorbers/mounting, which have already been changed. Only remaining
complaints so far are some intrusive wind noise from the driver's side.
Nothing extreme, but annoying nonetheless. I am hoping Volvo can resolve
this issue within the next few weeks. They said they needed a whole day to
look into this issue, but I haven't had time for that yet.

But in terms of driving feel, its hard to beat. Now, the S40 ain't no
racer, but for me, its engine is good enough with reasonable FC. For a sub
200k car, you basically get the works. Well, maybe except for HID lighting.
:). All said, I am still very happy with the car (for the moment).

Good luck!

Sotong,

Thanks for the feedback.

What do you think about the interior space, especially the rear legroom?
How does it compare to your former Civic 1.7? I always find the Civic a
very big car internally (since 1992 EG, when Honda introduced the 2620mm
long wheelbase). I was driving the EJ Civic and felt that it was bigger
than the first model S40. Then I replaced the EJ with the Cefiro, which
has a wheelbase of 2700mm and boy, is it big!!!

I am having some concern as far as going back to a smaller car of 2640
wheelbase. I can live with a rear legroom comparable to the Civic's but
anything smaller might be a problem tho.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hi sengthee,

1) No air-cond (o-ring leaking) -- fiexed; 1 trip
2) Faulty front right absorber bearing -- fiexed; 2 trips
3) Faulty front absorbers -- fiexed; 2 trips
4) High performance CD-player got stuck -- fiexed; 2 trips
5) Foul smell when switcing on the air-cond -- partially fixed; 1 trip
6) Water leaking into rear right-hand side carpet (air-cond problem) --
fiexed; 1 trip
7) Faulty front wheel bearings -- to be fixed soon; 2 trips

Despite all these problems, S40 2.4i is a car excellent in volvo-proven
safety competencies!

There are many aspects of reliability. As for the first batch of S40
2.4i, there are some mechanical reliability problems for the absorber
bearings and wheel bearings (for my case). However, the mechanical
reliability for these parts are secondary compared to safety
reliability. Would anyone consider cars with air-bag but with unproven
reliability? Would anyone consider car (with unreliable structural
integrity) that will break into two in a collision? Safety reliability,
one of the most important aspects of reliability, is legendary for Volvo
compared to all other premium cars of similar class. When one can walk
SAFELY out from a Volvo after a severe collision, that's the moment of
true appreciation for the extra $$$ paid for a Volvo.

Ahh..good question. I do not have the numbers, but I feel the Civic had
better interior space than the S40. Especially since the ES had a flat
floor at the back, and the headroom is also better.

However, it is of not much consequence to me as I drive the car almost all
the time. Be warned though that space at the back is a little restrictive.

Oh, and I get tons of brake dust too on the rims. Sigh..

As Jenn said, Volvo=safety. Can't really explain it, but you would feel
really safe in the car.

I'm driving the car for 3 months now, only problem with child lock. not
yet check

other than that, it's a very fun to drive, the feel is hard to tell, it
can be a romantic slow moving car or if sometime you wanna left behind to
teach a bad so called a fast road driver, no problem. just push, it will
go.

Hello S40 owners, it has been a while since I visited here. I driven mine for 10 months now. So far
so good, no complain. Bullied quite a number of high end cars on the NSE, and so far paid 3 samans
haha.

I had only 2 problems within 2 months, first was the CD changer and the next was the aircond water
leaking into carpets as mention by Jenn88. All fixed. Just got my first 20000 km services last week
with a new firmware upgrade that resolve the gearshift problem. Now is smoother.
