As in any car, over-heat situation will occur if :
a. Leakage in the heating system ie radiator, pipings,etc
b. tempreture faulty
c. water pump failure
d. broken drive belt
Well, if your car is scheduly maintain and did not go off-road often then there should not be any such situation.

yes, i agree. maintenance is the key. i disagree however that overheating is a thing of the past, the aluminum blocks of modern cars don't tolerate heat as well as did the steel blocks of older cars.

As long as you service your car regualrly at the specialised workshop it is fine. The only issue for the 1.6 is that the thermostat is made of plastic and needs to be replaced when you do the timimg belt change. However there is a product update now and these thermostat is now made of metal and once you change you can leave them be.
I drive hard, making a KL-Kemaman, KL Hatyai trip in 5 hours or less, and I commute KL Shah Alam daily on my 1.8LT, I have no problems with the car. It all depends on the maintainance mentality. Just because its cheap and heavily depreciated it doesnt mean at it'll costs like a Myvi to maintain. The same goes when you buy a used E46 or E90, it was built for a different target market and therefore when buying one its safe to spend at least 5K on full service, lube, tyres, timing belt, shocks for it to be as reliable as the day it came off the showroom. Btw mine has clocked 175,000KM over a 6 year period and still going strong.

Well its nice to be back again cause the last time i poted here i thin sometime in 2004 ? hehehe
i had my optra 5 since 2007 i have to say it a sturdy car and as long as i regularly service it it will take care of me on the road thats all i have to say its a very good car and fun to drive even on long journeys !

I'hd experienced overheated with my 6 years 1.6 optra
1.Plastic thermostat leaking after 5 years
2.Radiator casing leaking after 5 years and
3.Radiator hose leaking after 6 years
Just change all hoses last month and also change the thermostat to metal type, so far so good at the moment.
