We are all told it is illegal, but it would be interesting to find out
under which section or clause it is defined as illegal.
I am quite sure, our traffic laws was written long before the event of
radar detectors etc and it is unlikely to be written with making radar
detectors illegal in mind, but of course I could be the misinformed one.

the radar detectors are LEGAL~!!!

it is only deemed illegal till you get caught....hehe smile_clown.gif

radar detector is useless in Malaysia, basically the speed cam our polis is using are camera type which it can store pictures in the cam, the cam does not spread it's frequency until the "shoot" button has been pressed, and once the button has been pressed and the cam is aiming at your car, even if you have a radar detector, it is still too late. Unless you can get a Laser Protector install on your license plate which there will be 2 laser beams deflect the laser beam back to the speed cam, on the speed cam it shows your license plate is plain white color without any numbers or words, so that means even if the speed cam shows your car's speed is 180 or 200km, they won't be able to recognize what's your number plate. Another type of the laser protector will simply block the speed cam from detecting the car's speed. I have seen the demo video in Taiwan accessory shop when I had trip there previousy...

Another thing selling pretty hot in Taiwan is the number plate flipper, you can flip up or down your number plate simply by clicking a switch when you are in aggressive driving mode, speed cams won't be able to see your number plate also. smile_big.gif

In european countries or north america, the speed cam they are using mostly are consistantly spreading out frequency type and normally installed on the police vehicle. It can detect any of the cars' speed within it's range just by aiming the cam at the target vehicle, after the police saw the speed data of your vehicle on the cam, if you are speeding, they will just chase you like no tomorrow. Those type of speed cam doesn't store pictures, so they will need to hunt you down and get you a summon. For this kind of speed trap, the normal radar detector will detect a speed cam ahead like 1~3km in advance depends on the road condition. The best radar detector would be Valentine 1(V1) from the US for now and it cost like USD399. How It Works.

For the laser gun show in the web, it has to be very still and without any thing block in the way of the beam, so the cops needs to stand outside of the car, which can easy to be seen. The speed trap our polis is using is also the same, there can't be a glass blocking the beam, so they need to hide under the bridge or trees in the divider.
